So I guess I’ll be making up for not posting over the last 3 weeks of my challenge (yes I’ve still been doing it J)..so here it goes…I’ll include the 2 previous weeks in this post and this weeks in a new post.

14. Learn a new skill/36. Start learning a new language.

I love picking up different languages as I get the chance to travel. For years I’ve wanted to learn Spanish, not because I plan to move to a Spanish speaking country (but with me who knows) but because it has always intrigued me. Oh, I’ve tried to learn it a couple of times, but would always get preoccupied with something else and stop and then forget everything that I learned, but not this year. Things just seem to be popping out of nowhere since I’ve opened myself up to say yes to things I thought I would never try. So I’m checking my email and up pops this article “Simple guide to speaking foreign languages” from the blog ZEN Habits, now I hadn’t really thought about going back to learning Spanish until this popped into my inbox (the universe is very funny). Well the article started to talk about the best ways to learn without taking formal classes, which fit right into what I was looking for, and brought up the idea of using meet up groups like meetup.org to practice and meet with other like minded individuals. I never would have thought of doing something like that, but I signed up for that weekends meet up and ended up having a great time even though I didn’t know a word of Spanish. I read my first couple of Spanish paragraphs with everyone’s eyes on me (I’m sure I was butchering those words) and I didn’t even flinch. Everyone was so supportive and I’m so glad I took the chance to go.  Hopefully, this will be a start to my love affair with Spanish (and helping me learn a skill that I can use in my work won’t hurt either J)!

Coming in at number 20 on the “50 Ways to Open Your World to New Possibilities” was to join an adventure club.

20. Join an adventure club to try new activities, like white water rafting and rock climbing, and meet new people at the same time.

So what do I do? I started  taking Bikram Yoga. Now you may be saying (only if you’ve never taken this kind of yoga) ” well that doesn’t count as adventure”, but if trying to hold a tree pose in a 105 degree room with sweat dripping down your legs creating a constant slip action is not an adventure I don’t know what is.

Now I had previously heard about “hot yoga” and thought it sounded like something I would want to try. I’ve really been testing the limits of my body lately and I try to mix things up so that I don’t get bored with my workouts. I’ve managed to lose and keep off over 40 pounds in the last almost 2 years so I have to switch it up a bit to give my body something new to do. Considering that I am about as flexible as biscotti I thought taking yoga would help me to get the flexibility that I’ve always wanted, so I found a studio near by. I had no idea what exorbitant price I was going to run into but luckily the heavens were smiling down on me and I got a $29 unlimited pass for 30 days.

Bikram Yoga consist of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises, one right after the other in a highly lit (hot)  room. Trust me I had no idea what I was in for my first day of class. Now I work out a lot but when I say I wanted to run out of that room the first day I am not joking. Regardless of what people say about it, how many calories it does (or doesn’t) burn, I got a work out like no other and my body was just as sore from doing this as it is when I lift weights. Plus I just feel refreshed when I leave and more limber…if that’s the only reason you go then do it just for that, but you have to try it.

Maybe it wasn’t outdoors and I didn’t jump out of a plane with nothing but a parachute tied to my back, but trying to kick my leg back so far that I can see it over the top of my head was just as much of an adventure to me. It’s out of my comfort zone, and with so many changes happening my life I figured why not dive in and go with flow of change. I’m learning that life is a lot more giving when you move in tune with it instead of swimming against it. So here’s to new things, (new flexibility in all parts of our lives), and new possibilities! Number 5: Decluttering

So here’s number 5 out of 50…

5. Remove something from your life that doesn’t serve you to make room for something better and new. You never know what you might let in when you let something go.

Needless to say this year I have been learning a lot about moving on and letting go (which I won’t get into just yet) but to focus on this week alone, I probably did something that would make most people gasp for air, wait for it…wait for it…I deactivated my Facebook page!  Yes I am no longer a member of the FB community after 5 or so years.

My decision to leave was spawned by a few things, but do you ever notice how you can have in your mind to do something and all of a sudden something slaps you in the face that gives you the courage to take that leap, whether that leap is still a matter of choice or forced upon you. Looking at number 5 I now realize that FB was no longer serving me and my need to balance my energy. My energy has been off for months and I have been trying to figure out ways to get back to being myself without the tension and knots building inside of me. I started to look at ways to find peace in my life and remove those things that were not for my good and then it came to me…FB was one of the things that was draining my energy, so I decided then and there it had to go. We spend so much time watching other people’s lives, putting people into categories so that they can only see this or that. We spend more time managing and hiding various parts of our lives on FB than using it for actual social networking. It just wasn’t worth it to me anymore…But with the removal of my page, and other small things I got rid of in the declutter process, I finally got the motivation to start this blog. I let something go and let something better in…my love for writing.

Now maybe months or years from now I won’t feel the same way (that’s what the reactivation button is for) and I will find myself once again apart of the ever growing FB community, but for now I’m at peace and that’s all that matters…

Getting back to it…

My earliest memory of writing started when I was 10 years old. I joined a creative writing class and wrote a poem that ended up in a childrens book my class put together. Can you imagine what it feels like to know as a child that your words and the expression of those words means something? I hadn’t turned my back on it since…until recently that is.

Over the last few years I’ve gotten so caught up in the everyday (even if some of those days only included sitting on the couch watching netflix) that I stopped doing the thing that moved me the most. Even when I had the itch and felt like my mind was overflowing with things I wanted to get out, needed to get out, I put it on the back burner. But not anymore! I’m getting back to it.

And it all started with an article…I have been reading a blog called Tiny Buddah for a while now when I came across “50 ways to Open Your World to New Possibilities”. It had a ton of great tips, but what really hit me was a commenter who said something along the lines of “it would be great if some brave soul explored each tip once a week for a year”…a year of adventure he called it. So here I am and that’s where this blog will began…I will be documenting my journey through these 50 opportunities and see what awaits me on the other end…
